Please help me with reviewing my below essay. Thank you so much~
Topic:
Several languages are in danger of extinction because they are spoken by very small numbers of people. Some people say that governments should spend public money on saving these languages, while others believe that would be a waste of money. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.
My essay:
Minority languages are now gradually disappearing owing to fewer people practicing them. While a number of people think that it would be a waste of public budgets to safeguard these languages from the risk of extinction, I believe that governments should take practical actions to preserve them.
There are various compelling reasons why saving minority languages could be considered as a wasteful expenditure. First, a language spoken by a small group of people leads to a scarcity of resources consisting of teachers, teaching materials, and even students. This results in an exorbitant cost of linguistic education for popularizing the language, while the consequence is predictably undesirable. Second, the practice of a sole language instead of diverse languages in a society would be more effective in communication, education, and business. Additionally, governments could spend more money on other public services providing for all citizens than on languages practiced by several people.
On the other hand, I firmly hold the view that the preservation of minority languages should be pressingly taken by governments. Besides being a means of communication, a language plays an important role relating to the cultural identity of the people who speak it. Therefore, if governments make drastic endeavors at preventing minority languages from disappearing, they could also preserve the cultural diversity. Consequently, these countries could become a tourist attraction for individuals appealed by the cultural heritages, traditional customs, and rich history of the countries.
In conclusion, it seems to save money in the short term if we allow these minority languages to be extinct, but I insist that the acute repercussions resulting from our neglect will be perpetuated in the long term.
