Please review my IELTS essay task 2

Topic: The only way to improve road safety is to give much stricter punishments on driving offenses. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

My essay:

It is true that applying strict punishments on drivers is the best way to prevent careless or dangerous driving. However, I strongly disagree with the idea that this is the only way to improve road safety, there are a variety of alternative measures which would also be effective.

Punishments play a crucial role as a barrier that make drivers think twice before committing traffic offenses. There have been many set of laws, which punish the traffic criminals according to the affected levels that they cause. Specifically, light violations are penalized with economic punishments, or at worst, crimes may pay the prices with their lifetime. For example, those who drive while intoxicated should serve a prison sentence, as they endanger innocent lives. Consequently, with that strict law, offenders are banned from the road so they will no longer pose a danger to other road-users.

While the harsh penalties for offenders proved to be have positive effect, there are other methods which national and local authorities should take into account in order to improve safety. Firstly, installing speed cameras will make drivers become aware of the need to obey the speed limits and driving at standard and moderate speed can partly contribute to minimize the traffic accidents. Furthermore, it is necessary to strictly control driver training institutions where people must complete all the theory, practical lessons and participate in the educational course about laws and other consequences if they commit the offense. As a result, this lead to the guarantee about the quality of those behind the wheels when clearly understand all this issues. Finally, a policy of conducting regular vehicle inspections, at authorized centers, may reduce the accidents caused by mechanical failures.

In conclusions, applying only strict punishments is not adequate in order to enhance safety of road-users, so a range of other methods should be considered and accompanied with this.

Thanks a lot!
