The diagrams illustrate the cross-sections of two tunnels. The first one is between two countries: France and Italy, and the second one is between two Japanese islands: Hokkaido and Japanese.
Overall, Seikan Railway Tunnel in Japan was constructed under the sea whereas Mont-Blac Road Tunnel was built under a mountain. The tunnel in Japan is longer than took more time to complete than the other one.
It took 42 years to build 53.85 km Seikan Railway Tunnel compared to 8 years of the construction of Mont-Blac Road Tunnel, which spreads 11.6 km, roughly five times shorter than the tunnel in Japan.
While the tunnel joining France and Italy was built 3.5 km under the top of the mountain, the depth of Seikan Railway Tunnel is 240 m from sea level. The Mont-Blac Road is a straight tunnel connecting two countries, whereas Seikan Railway Tunnel has steeper lines at the two ends.
