Topic:The diagram below illustrates the carbon cycle in nature.Write a 150-word description of this diagram for a university lecturer.My essay:The diagram illustrates the carbon cycle, a major biogeochemical process that sustains life on Earth.There are five major stages in the cycle: precipitation, respiration, combustion, photosynthesis and decomposition.Carbon in the earth’s atmosphere exists mainly in the form of carbon dioxide. The cycle begins with carbon dioxide precipitating out as rain. Once on the surface, most of it will be absorbed by water and the others by plants through a process called photosynthesis; this uses sunlight to transform carbon dioxide into oxygen and energy in the form of sugar when combined with water. Herbivores then obtain the energy by consuming the plants, while carnivores do it by feeding on the herbivores. However, for plants and animals that die naturally, their bodies together with the waste products produced by the earth’s organisms deposit and then absorb into the soil and underground rock formations. Over very long time period, they mineralize into fossils and fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide is released back into the atmosphere either by plant and animal respiration or people extracting and burning these fuels. And the cycle begins again.

That is a very bad and misleading diagram.

What comes out of clouds is rain, which is water, H₂O, not liquid CO₂.

Liquid CO₂cannot exist in any condition on earth. It requires a very high pressure, and very low temperature. It always exists as a gas. The gas is absorbed by plant cells in photosynthesis. The gas is exhaled in our lungs and the lungs of other animals. The gas can be absorbed by water. In fact some soft drinks (fizzy sodas) are excess carbon dioxide gas mixed into water under pressure.

That is incorrect. Carbon Dioxide is a gas, not a liquid or solid, at the temperature and pressure conditions of the earth's surface. It is in the atmosphere in very very small percentages.

In general, there is a reservoir of carbon dioxide (CO2) in earth's atmosphere which is removed and replenished by biological as well as geological processes: respiration, assimilation, decomposition, and vulcanism.

The processes that absorb CO2 from the atmosphere are: assimilation by soil, plants, and animals especially phytoplankton in the oceans. There are process that balance this, releasing CO2 back into the atmosphere. Examples are animal respiration, where animals use oxygen and expel CO2. Photosynthesis is the opposite. Plants and algae need CO2 for their energy, and they exchange it for oxygen. In the oceans, carbon is used by animals which make their shells of calcium carbonate. Great amounts of carbon are locked in the form of marine deposits. Geologic processes bury the deposits and convert them into limestone. Organic matter is also buried and is converted over a long time into fossil fuels. Volcanos can release some of this buried carbon. Since the industrial revolution, people have been extracting and burning fossil fuels, which puts large amounts of CO2 into the air.
