Please review my IELTS essay: Discussion

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Topic:

Nowadays animal experiments are widely used to develop new medicines and to test the safety of other products. Some people argue that these experiments should be banned because it is morally wrong to cause animals to suffer, while others are in favour of them because of their benefits to humanity. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

My essay:

It is true that new medicines and various medical products are currently experimented on animals first to check if they are safe for humans. While these testing might be unethical to some extent, I would argue that their benefits to human beings are much more crucial.

On the one hand, the major argument against animal testing is that these practices are immoral acts which tend to cause suffering to animals. In various medical researches, for instance, new drugs whose unverified outcomes are often experimented on a great number of laboratory mice to observe efficacy on living bodies, which could make these subjects suffer from extreme pains. Worse still, most of these attempts are likely to be flawed and therefore these mice are often being killed. Since the lives of these animals are also precious, humans should not do harm to them in this way and therefore these experiments should be prohibited.

On the other hand, I would favor opinions that support the profound effects of animal experimentation on humans for several reasons. Since animal subjects, such as chimpanzees or monkeys, are similar to us in many biological aspects, practices on these mammals are often reliable enough to ensure the safety and effectiveness of medicines with human beings. As a result, human benefits are gained as much as possible while side effects are mostly mitigated. Another argument is that the suffering of animals is increasingly minimized in testing. Owing to scientific breakthroughs, drugs and chemicals are possibly tested on cells of mammals, which allows to find any potential threats to these animals before real practices on living bodies.

In conclusion, while medical experiments on animals might be inhumane in some ways, I believe that the contributions of animal experimentation to humanity are of more importance.
