Topic: Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

My essay:

Advertisement has always been an essential part in the field of marketing. In recent decades, people have seen a noticeable increase in the number of advertisements, whether it is on the media such as television or widespread through social network platforms. The aim of advertisments is to get customers to purchase a targeted product. Meanwhile this approach has been proven successful generally, some hold a belief that it is too monotonous to catch the consumers’ attention any more.

On the one hand, advertisements can play a persuasive tool to hypnotize people into consuming goods and services. Due to the fact that the tactics placed in the messages, such as displaying consumers having a good time together when using a particular product, using bandwagons, demonstrating merely the upsides of usage. Besides, applying compare and contrast strategies to indicate the effects of using the product and make it stand out. Furthermore, these messages are repeated several times and soon it may brainwash watchers to eventually go out and get the item. For example, if a person is watching TV and meets a certain advertisement of a beverage the variety of times, the repeated sight of the tempting drink may result in that person feeling thirsty and succumbing to the advertisement at last.

On the other hand, watchers harbor a viewpoint that the widespread of advertisements makes it a normal thing. Experiencing a dozen of advertisement, individuals become frustrated and cease to focus on the message of the advertisement. Some may choose to turn off the TV with the aim to avoid annoying advertisements. A real life example that can be seen from advertisements in a particular social media platform is Youtube. In the Youtube marketing mechanism, advertisements are placed before and in between videos, hoping that the viewers would watch the advertisements. Nevertheless, this is not usually the case, since many watchers would just click the button “Skip Ad” and continue on.

In the light of the above analysis, I side with the stance of the former to a larger extent, believing that advertisements becomes more creative and various. Moreover, this kind of marketing is ever-changing with the aim to meet the customers’ demands.
