Some people think that detailed descriptions of crime scenes in newspapers and on TV can have a bad influence on the public, so this kind of information should be restricted in the media. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
In recent years, the growing demand of being exposed to social problems leads to the increasing broadcast of crime scenes in media, from newspapers to televisions. From my perspective, this tendency exerts both positive and negative impacts on the public and putting age restrictions on people approaching this kind of information is an efficient solution to address these drawbacks.
Undeniably, lives commonly entail risks; therefore, the descriptions of crime scenes that are made public can alert people to bad situations. The residents, when keeping themselves posted about homicides, know that they need to equip themselves with practical skills like defending, conflict management and the like to survive in an emergency and be more cautious with suspicious people. More importantly, by diverting people’s attention to the root causes of the incidents, this information raises people’s awareness of the importance of listening and paying attention to the communities of the weak, who suffer from mental illness or are partly influenced by negative factors in society leading to the distortion in their perception and behavior. Furthermore, the huge quantity of news about crime scenes in newspapers and television can be fruitful sources of inspiration for writers, novelists, and film producers. These detailed descriptions of crime scenes are then transformed into the books and films that we see today. Many films like Jefferey Dahmer, Don't *** with cats, and Stranger Things epitomize this point. These films are based on real events involving criminals around the world.
On the other hand, the spreading of criminal details can put people's awareness and behavior in jeopardy. Youngsters who are not mature enough to sort out the information they get exposed to can idolize the images of the murderers and even follow their examples. As a result, not only is releasing the descriptions of crime scenes counterproductive but governments can also have difficulty in controlling the increasing number of hooligans. Additionally, many residents, after reading this type of news, can be obsessed with the horrors of crimes and be on the verge of depression, anxiety and have a bad impression of society. This also breeds their suspicion and social isolation.
Because youngsters under 18 years old and those who are easily disturbed with some contents like racism, violence, the aspects of gore and the like are negatively affected the most, there should be a trigger warning at the beginning of these contents, and some information should be restricted to approach.
To sum up, the broadcast of the detailed descriptions of crime scenes in newspapers and on TV has both pros and cons. Hence, any effort to reduce the drawbacks, like age restrictions to this kind of information, is a positive step forward.
