Topic: Some young people look forward to a year of traveling, a “gap year” before they begin work or university, and see it as a chance to broaden their horizons. For others, this is an expensive waste of time. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

The young have different views with regard to the question of what they should do before immersing themselves in university or work. While some argue that it would be better to get straight to work after graduating to save time, I believe that a gap year can be very rewarding.

There are various reasons why young people should not take a gap year for traveling. Many people assert that they are afraid of peer pressure. For example, if a high school student spends a year traveling rather than starting university study straight after school, she might have a sense of being left behind by her peers in terms of education when she comes back. Apart from that, some presume that gappers end up in holiday resorts and do not even see many cultures, which leads to an unproductive experience and wastes their time. Finally, people reckon that a graduate traveling to distant places is wasting money instead of earring it. This may lead to the extension of an unstable life and put a financial burden on his family.

Nevertheless, I believe that it is more beneficial for the young to experience the world before continuing their education or career path. Firstly, by exploring the new land and experiencing diverse cultures, people can do more voluntary work, and even find a part-time job while traveling in order to broaden their knowledge and gain more real-life experiences, which might bring benefits for their work in the future. Secondly, people might get to understand themselves better such as their strengths, shortcomings, and hobbies. This means that young people can make time to contemplate what they really long for or what occupations suit them, which helps them make the right decisions on their work in the future.

In conclusion, it seems to me that young people are more likely to be beneficial and successful in their lives if they spend a year of traveling before starting their work.
