Task 2: Fewer young people do farming work in rural areas. Why? Should young people be encouraged to do farming work?

Today, there has been an inexorable decline in the number of young farmers in the countryside. Personally, I opine that this trend is attributed to several factors such as the incorporation of modern machines and lacking opportunities in remote areas; nonetheless, I still advocate young minds’ engagement in agriculture as this can elevate their social consciousness.

There are two main reasons behind the decreasing workforce in agriculture. One of which is that the digital era has somehow jeopardized farming work. Indeed, demanding tasks have been largely undertaken by the use of sophisticated machines to generate more desirable outcomes such as increased productivity and efficacy, hence the replacement of humans in labor-intensive industries namely agriculture. For example, some agriculture-based countries have already applied robots to procedures in agricultural production such as harvesting or watering instead of humans. Consequently, young people may be deterred from joining this sector. Moreover, the very fact that working in metropolises will potentially offer better promotion prospects and greater scope for a fulfilling career for workers. Thus, the youth are more content to move to cities and apply for leading businesses to gain new skills and hopefully earn more money.

However, I still contend that motivating adolescents to do farming work will potentially raise their awareness of the environment. Unarguably, young minds are among the leading demographics in damaging the natural habitat through imprudent actions such as bulk purchasing and excessive littering, giving rise to intractable problems which corrosively compromise agriculture namely water pollution and soil degradation. Therefore, should more and more young individuals become farmers, they will become responsible for environmental destruction and then make a concerted attempt to save the Earth.

In conclusion, I maintain that the shortage of young farmers in rural areas is due in large part to few potentials for a satisfactory career and the use of technology in farming work as a surrogate for the labor force. Nonetheless, youth inclusion into the agricultural workforce should be promoted to help nurture teenagers’ mindsets.
