Oct 5: Some people believe that it is wrong to keep animals in zoos, while others think that zoos are both entertaining and ecologically important. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Due to industrialization and people’s lack of awareness about the environment, thousands of species have vanished from the Earth. One of the most controversial arguments about the environment is the maintenance of zoos, with one side stating it is unethical and the other believing it is fun and can protect the ecosystem. This essay will focus on both sides of this argument and illustrate my viewpoint.
On the one hand, some people think it is immoral to cage animals in zoos. They argue that animals belong to the natural environment, which means humans cannot force them to leave their habitat for the sake of entertainment. For them, it is a wrongful act because animals may lose their instincts and cannot live as their true self or survive in the wild if they are released. In addition, not all zoos operate with a view to protecting animals. Some zoos whose concerns are only profits might mistreat animals, which has negative effects on animals’ overall wellbeing.
On the other hand, opposers hold that zoos are an amazing source of entertainment and plays a vital role in the preservation of animals. To begin with, some zoos capture threatened animals to protect them from extinction. They then release animals into the wild, which helps revive and sustain endangered species and ensure biodiversity. Besides, zoos can be a great meeting place for family and friends to reunite, not to mention exploring the animal world that they do not often have the opportunity to see. However, I maintain that national parks are better at fulfilling both these needs for the following reasons. First, these parks are funded solely for the preservation of animals, which means all of their profits will be beneficial to the environment. Second, visiting animals thriving in their natural habitats and doing activities based on their instincts is much more rewarding than seeing them in a restricted space.
In conclusion, although zoos bring certain some advantages, they do more harm for animals than good. In the long term, zoos are not as entertaining and friendly as national parks, and they may also do immoral acts against species. (354 words)
