Topic:

Some people believe that developments in the field of artificial intelligence will have a positive impact on our lives in the near future. Others, by contrast, are worried that we are not prepared for a world in which computers are more intelligent than humans. Discuss both of these views and give your own opinion.

My essay:

People have different views about how advances in artificial intelligence will affect lives of human being. Personally, I am both fascinated by profound influences of artificial intelligence and apprehensive about its future negative impacts.

On the one hand, machine intelligence has several positive effects. Since this intelligence is initially intended for numerical computation and simulations, it possibly helps us find solutions of complicated problems in various fields. For example, machine intelligence in super computer systems is capable of modelling weather conditions of regions in the world and give us urgent warnings about impending disasters. Another positive impact is that this intelligence benefits humans from automating repetitive tasks precisely and efficiently. For instance, in the realm of manufacturing, intelligent robots could perform accurately actions in the fraction of the time that a human would regularly take, which could improve work performance and productivity.

On the other hand, I share concerns of people who argue that artificial intelligence might harm human beings if we are not well prepared for this possibility. Advances of this intelligence technology possibly remove demands of human labors in various works, which leads to unemployment rise. Workers in factories, for example, could be unemployed due to intelligent manufacturing robots while drivers could lose their jobs because of autonomous vehicles. On top of those concerns, there are ones about the fact that humans would possibly lose control of artificial intelligence when it becomes too intelligent and independent. Worse still, this intelligence may consider humans as its threats and become our adversary, as what we often see in science fiction movies.

In conclusion, while machine intelligence will make invaluable contributions to our lives in many ways, its potential threats should also be taken into account.
