Topic:

The high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising but not the real need of the society where such products are sold. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

My essay:

Nowadays, the question of whether high sales of popular consumer goods are the result of the power of advertising but not the real need of the society has been receiving a great deal of public attention. Although advertising does impact on sales, I contend that other justifications should be considered.

There are a whole host of reasons why advertisers can induce people to shop more. First, since many marketers have adopted the repetition strategy when advertising, pieces of advertisements are prevalent either on newspaper or on television. In fact, if people are consecutively exposed to glossy photos and promises from ads, they are enticed to go shopping, which significantly boosts the sales of producers. Second, by inviting famous figures to be their endorsers, marketing firms could take advantage of the needs to imitate their idols to gain credibility from their loyal fans, which leads to a buying-craze as a result. For example, when Roger Federer became the endorser for a line of sneakers of Nike, this product was immediately viewed as the fad for his fans, inducing them to flock into Nike stores.

Nevertheless, the merits of advertising should be taken into account. First, in order to introduce outstanding goods to customers, advertisements play a role of a bridge between customers and manufacturers. In fact, only producers with high quality products that are widely purchased can properly fund prohibitively expensive marketing campaigns, which indicates that advertising is a mean to gain customer’s trust. Second, it is certain that a huge number of people who make a lucrative income are in need to satisfy their shopping demands. This means that the demand of increasing standard of living of people is practical and advertising, as a result, is to provide them with the appropriate products that they desire, which contributes to their well-being.

In conclusion, although advertising has enticed people to shop impulsively, the upsides of it should not be overlooked. By bridging customers and makers, advertisements have proven its irreplaceable significance in the market.
