Please review my IELTS essay

Topic:

Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

My essay:

In the modern world, learning a new language is considered as important as maths. Many experts think that starting to learn a foreign language at primary school is much better than secondary school, I would argue that there are both benefits and drawbacks.

On the one hand, it is undeniable that learning a new language from a young age could bring plenty of advantages to children. First of all, children are likely to pick up a different language is easier than adolescents. They learn it like learning their mother tongue. Second, children learn with no shyness and talk freely with each other without any fear of making mistakes. For example, many people struggle to communicate simply because they are afraid of being a joke when mispronouncing. Moreover, learning a new language can improve their essential skills such as self-confidence or the ability in dealing with foreigners.

On the other hand, it also has some disadvantages. When learning a foreign language at primary age, children could be affected in the ability to learn their mother tongue. They may be confused with learning many languages at the same time, which could lead to delay development of child's first language. Furthermore, it may be a waste of their studies time in learning necessary subjects such as maths, science, and mother tongue language at that age. Finally, learning of foreign language can put more pressure on children and take their fun time.

By way of conclusion, it seems to me that learning an international language is one of the significant skills and it should be taught in primary school.

Thanks a lot!
