Question: Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Answer:
Music is possibly one of the most primitive and oldest forms of communication between humans. Not only does it entertain and help people to relax, music is also believed to be an amazing way to diminish the gap between people of different cultural backgrounds and age groups. I personally strongly agree with this point of view.
First of all, music is a universal language that can be received and understood by anyone. Apart from lyrics, there are various elements that together constitute a complete song. For example, melodies and rhythm are indispensable in every song. Therefore, there are other means appealing to listeners’ feelings besides lyrical facet. One significant example is K-pop, a music genre that has been increasingly gaining its popularity for recent years. Not everyone can fathom the lyrics since their mother tongue is not Korean, however, they can still enjoy it for its uplifting beats and the energetic feels that it brings. In addition, artists can through musical products convey their feelings. Humans, regardless of where they come from, all have a certain range of emotions and as a result, people can easily resonate with the writers. People with similar liking will then come together and create a network.
Secondly, music does not really have an age restriction but is rather classified into genres and people from different generations can certainly have the same preferences for genres. It is actually more than common to meet a person from the younger generation to take fancy to jazz or classical music – music types that dated back long ago, and vice versa, older people can still enjoy listening to current popular music genres, such as electronic or dance music. Because of that, music can be an effective way to foster the bond between generations and, in a way, preserve the traditions and cultures of one’s nation.
In conclusion, I am of the belief that music can unite people despite their cultures or age differences. People can sympathize with each other and form strong networks through music.
