Topic: As science and technology contribute most to the development of society, science students should get more financial support from the government than students in other fields (e.g. business, language). To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Never in the history was science and technology emphasized as in modern society. Therefore, many people agree that governments should invest more on science students by giving them scholarships or financial supports than students in other fields. However, this lopsided emphasis seems ungrounded.

We cannot deny that achievements from science and technology has changed our lives to more convenient environment. Nevertheless, people are suffering from problems that cannot be solved by logic and calculations. Juvenile deliquency, gender discrimination, stress or moral degradation are all beyond the scope of science. People are more often plagued by problems of the heart and soul instead of the body. As a consequence, humans’ quality of lives will decrease dramatically, both in physical and mental aspects.

Beside, the amount of supporting money should depend on students’s academic performance. How much financial support is needed should be determined on an individual basis. Grants or scholarship should not be lavished upon those without interest in or dedication, whereas those with desire and potential should be offered adequate financial support in order that they can concentrate on their study. It is not the matter of what majors they are engaging in, the first and foremost criteria for receiving financial aid should be their academic potential. Thus, it is unfair to favor science majors more than other students.

All subjects in the world are vital to human progress. It will be an unbalanced comparison to decide what subjects is more important. Therefore, financial support should be offered for those with real desire and potential.
