Developments in technology have brought various environmental problems. Some

believe that people need to live simpler lives to solve environmental problems. Others,

however, believe technology is the way to solve these problems. Discuss both views

and give your own opinion.

Improvements in technology are harming the environment. Although some argue that having us lead simpler lives is the way to solve environmental issues, pursuing advancement in technology is a more effective way to tackle such problems.

Those who advocate for people to live more simply, in order to help the environment by relying less on technology, suggest that people should walk or cycle rather than drive cars. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that the number of cars being manufactured and used is increasing; this creates large amounts of exhaust fume emissions and significantly increases air pollution levels. Proponents of a simpler way of life also suggest that people should try to reduce their consumption of electricity so that the exploitation of natural resources. such as fossil fuels or nuclear power, can be minimized; an example of this being done is the annual event called Earth Hour, when everyone is asked to turn their lights off for 60 minutes.

However, the development of technology can greatly contribute to environmental protection. First, by harnessing the proliferation of technology with regard to waste treatment, environmental scientists are able to develop ways to recycle various materials, such as paper or glass, and even waste that would take hundreds of years to decompose, thereby reducing the problem of waste disposal.
