Please review my IELTS essay

Topic: This day a large amount of food is transported large distances before it is consumed. What are advantages and disadvantages of this trend?

My essay:

Since food plays a paramount importance in our life, there are loads of ways to transport a vast amount of food from a long distance before it is consumed. Both merits and demerits of this phenomenon will be analyzed in this essay.

The rise of food transportation after long-distance has some major merits. First and foremost, it would be a more diverse choice of food that are not available domestically. For example, cherries and kiwis are imported to Vietnam hundreds of tonnes on a yearly basis from European countries. Second, exporters would gain a lot of profit owing to sell products to the global market. This could contribute to expand operations in many nations as well as create job opportunities for the locals.

However, this would have negative impacts between local manufactures and imported-product. This might stem from increasing competition with international brands in terms of prices and quality, leading to tumbling in profit even bankrupt that might cut down jobs for the locals. Moreover, products are transported from far distance cause detriment to the biosphere due to long transportations involves the combustion of fossil fuels which release carbon dioxide or hazardous pollutants. As a consequence, the environment would be affected by the greenhouse effect, global warming and depletion of the zone layer.

To recapitulate, despite the upside of this phenomenon, it also has some downsides that should not be underestimated.
