Please review my IELTS essay

Some people think that politicians have the greatest influence on the world. Other people, however, believe that scientists have the greatest influence.

Discuss both of these views and give your own opinion.

There has been debate over whether policy makers or scientists have the greatest impact on people’s life. Despite the factors that make politicians influential people, I would argue that scientists have the most powerful effect on society.

It is understandable why politicians are said to have a great impact. First of all, the way a country is run depends largely on the rules and regulations that are given by policy makers. For example, strict punishments can act as a deterrent to crime which helps reduce the criminal rate and bring safety to the community. Second, when it comes to foreign affairs, these people decide whether to maintain a good relationship with a nation or turn their back on it. Such decision strongly affects people’s welfare in different ways and levels. For instance, when the American government declared its trade embargo on Cuba in the past, the majority of Cubans citizens had difficulty making their living and children had to suffer from hunger, diseases and a lack of proper education.

On the other hand, I believe that scientists are most influential because of some convincing reasons. To begin with, it is undeniable that through the length of history, our living standard improved along with technological advancements. Our ancestors no longer had to eat raw meat thanks to the invention of fire, and we did not have to live in the dark after the introduction of light bulb. In addition, scientists working in medical fields are undoubtedly contributing to our well-being and prosperity. An example is that a group of researchers from Germany have almost successfully created a cure for breast cancer and are just a few months away from completing it for commercial use. Only when people do not have to worry about their health will they be able to enjoy life to the fullest.

To sum up, while politicians have a great impact on the world today as they decide how people live, I would argue that scientists are most influential because they make life better.
