SPEAKING QUESTIONS ABOUT FAMILY

Introduce your family.

There are five of us, apart from my parents I have two siblings, a younger sister and a younger brother. My sister and I are just one year apart, while my brother is four years younger than me.

Do you spend a lot of time with your family?

Not really, even though I’m currently living with my parents, we don’t talk much, and the only time of the day that we may have a conversation is meal time. This is because we have completely different schedules and do not have a lot in common to talk about. While I tend to stay awake until 3 in the morning and only wake up when it is 11 pm, my parents go to bed at around 10 and go to work at about 1 in the afternoon and usually go off work at about 5 pm, but they normally go to their friends’ houses after work. Even when they are at home, while my mom watches tv and my dads listen to the news on his phone, I stick to my laptop or my phone until sleeping time. In terms of my two siblings, the sister is living with her husband about 20 kilometers away from us, and the brother is living in a different city learning at a university.

Spending time with your family or your friends

Well, I actually don't have any friends, but even if I have one, I would rather spend time with my family. You know, as everyone says, blood is thicker than water.

Is family important in your country?

Yes, absolutely, family is a priority in our culture. Not only does it has a great influence on what kind of a person a child will grow up, but it’s also the place where you can really be your true self and can help you go through thick and thin.

Families today and families in the past:

In the past, families were bigger. But things have changed a lot. Now, families tend to be smaller. While I only have two siblings, my dad has seven, and my mom has six. In terms of income, more and more women have become breadwinners. In fact, people in my grandmother's generation usually could only work as a farmer, so naturally, men were the ones who brought home the bacon as they were physically stronger, but from my parent's generation, there have been more and more opportunities for trade, and typically women are more good as this, so gradually women earn more than man. The same situation can be seen in my family.

The role grandparents play in families nowadays

They often bring up their grandchildren as the parents are occupied with work. Most of my uncles and aunts are taking care of their daughters' or sons’ children. One of my uncles typically takes up the role of both parents as his daughter and her husband work in Japan as long-term international contract workers.

Responsibility for care of the elderly:

To my mind, it’s obviously the job of their children. In my country, it is more likely that the elderly would live with their son, while the daughter is taking care of her’s husband’s parents. If the elderly have many children, usually the youngest son is the one who will look after them. I don't really know what is the exact reason for this choice, though. Oh, nursing homes are considered taboo in my country as people would deem you as having no filial piety if you put your parents in there. I have never in my life seen one, and no elderly people that I know live in it.

Thank you in advance.
