22-Jan-2020: More and more young people from wealthy countries are spending a short time doing unpaid work such as teaching or building houses for communities in poorer countries.
Why young people choose to do so? Who will benefit more: young people or the communities?
Today many young adults, who belong to wealthy nations, do volunteering for a brief period of time, such as building houses for poor people and teaching their children. In my opinion, the reason they do so is to gain some experience, and communities are benefited more than the young people.
Young adults opt to do volunteer work since they want to acquire some work experience. The multitude of employers nowadays offer jobs to only those candidates who have some prior work experience regardless of paid or unpaid. In fact, some companies do not consider resumes of people at all who do not have any contribution in society. JP Morgan, the largest investment bank of the USA, for instance, offers employment opportunities to only those candidates who have volunteered in society. The reason is that they can handle the work pressure better than those who do not have any prior experience.
As far as volunteering advantage is concerned, I believe that communities are benefited more than the young people. This is because societies do not pay any cost of services when young adults work for them. In other words, they save the money which they can deploy in other necessary things. Take Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, as an example. Many university students teach poor children of non-government organizations without charging any single penny. With the amount these organizations save, they buy clothes and food for poor children. Besides, more educated people means more developed society.
In conclusion, although young people do social work because they want to gain experience, I take the view that communities are benefited more as their cost is saved that they can use in other important things.
