Topic: Today, TV channels broadcast men’s sports shows more than women’s sport shows.
Why is this the case?
Should TV channels give equal showtime for each?
Essay:
These days, TV programs are giving more exposure to male sporting games compared to that of females. From my perspective, this trend stems from the economic benefits and women’s sports shows should be given more screentime.
The primary factor leading to the dominance of men's sports is that they attract considerably more viewers than their counterparts. The deep-rooted assumptions about men’s prevalence on physical health and endurance have made them more suitable for playing sports, whereas female athletes are deemed inferior. For example, the Men’s World Cup, a quadrennial international championship, attracted ten times more viewers than the Women’s World Cup. Therefore, TV broadcast companies will be inclined toward men’s sports events for higher ratings and advertising contracts.
However, I would argue that TV broadcasters should give an equitable amount of airtime for both female and male sports shows. Firstly, this will contribute to the promotion of gender equality in the field of sport. If women's sports programs received more opportunities for broadcasting, this will act as the inspiration and observation of their effort. More females will be encouraged to take up sports as a profession. Besides, more interest has been placed in women’s participation in sport. Hence, increasing television coverage for female sports events will allow viewers to entertain on their preferences. This is also a wise strategy that helps companies gain more revenue and investments.
In conclusion, the large profits offered was the primary reason why male’s sports show has prevailed over that of females. Also, I believe that women athletes' shows should be given more attention on TV and other media platforms.
