Essay:

Many people are convinced that museums should primarily focus on exhibiting local history rather than international works of art. While I agree that local works are of great value, I believe that the importance of international items cannot be ignored.

On the one hand, there are reasons why local culture should be given the highest priority. First, the primary purpose of museums is to show national history and traditions. By going to these museums, people will have the precious opportunities to accumulate a deep understanding of the past. For example, through historical objects, young people can know about the periods of glory and decline that their country has been through. These will give them a sense of roots and belonging, and help to cultivate their national pride and patriotism. Second, museums contribute significantly to the preservation of national customs and traditions. Some crafts, costumes, and ways of life, which are considered outdated in the modern world, now can be saved behind the glass.

On the other hand, I believe that art and history are not confined with boundaries, and exhibiting international works of art could be beneficial. To begin with, the residents will have the chance to be exposed to artifacts and artworks from different countries. These will broaden their horizon in the world and lead to a more inclusive and diversified society in the long run. Furthermore, displaying items of foreign countries bring economic benefits to the museum. People have always learned local history well, but they possess a limited understanding of other cultures. Therefore, they show a keen interest to know about foreign countries and are not reluctant to pay for the entry tickets to museums.

In conclusion, I believe that local culture and history shouldn’t be the sole focus of museums and art galleries. International artworks are of equal importance and should be promoted as well.
