Topic:

Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

What other measures do you think might be effective?

Essay:

Over the last few years, traffic congestion and pollution are two pressing problems all over the world. Many solutions have been proposed to deal with these two issues, and increasing the oil prices is one of those. In my opinion, this idea is totally flawed and there are several reasonable alternatives.

On the one hand, a rise in petrol price has little to do with tackling traffic and pollution issue. First, the inevitable demand for traveling in the modern world makes this method rather insignificant. In other words, people will still travel on a daily basis using petrol as there are no viable options available to run vehicles. Therefore, it brings little difference to the problems. Second, this solution can detrimentally affect the economy. Higher prices of gas will indirectly influence the price of various goods in the markets by increasing their transportation. Consequently, this will burden the average people and limit their freedom to travel.

On the other hand, alternatives to the increased price of petrol show greater effectiveness. To begin with, using non-petroleum cars or utilize sustainable energy to run vehicles could be a great step. The technology is already available to produce some clean energy such as solar power, wind energy, hydro energy. Persuading manufacturers and consumers to adopt this new technology in traveling could be an effective strategy to address the issues of traffic and pollution. Additionally, the government should encourage people to use public transport instead of driving their own cars through enhancing the road systems and services. For example, public transport could be improved by having more buses and trains available, making it more punctual and having attractive and affordable long-distance services.

In conclusion, elevating petrol prices is not the best way to tackle the problem of traffic and pollution. Some other methods could be adopted instead.
