Over the last few years, social media has deeply infiltrated into everyone’s life. It is a widely held belief that people tend to pay more attention to their private devices than conversations with people around them. This reality can cause much harm to both individuals and society.
To begin with, people who are addicted to social media may experience negative side effects on their mental and physical health. In terms of physical, the overuse of mobile devices results in some serious problems such as eye strain, obesity, or lack of sleep. The light which is emitted from our phones, tablets, and laptops has been found to cause dry eye and irritation, painful throbbing headaches around the eye region, and even blurred vision. Wasting time sitting in front of those screens also means that we will have less time to spend outside playing, running, and burning off calories. Over time, those habits can lead to significant weight gain. When it comes to mental health, multiple studies have found a strong link between heavy social media and an increased risk for depression, anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts. Social media platforms such as Twitter can be hotspots for spreading hurtful rumors, lies, and abuse that can leave lasting emotional scars.
Furthermore, spending too much time on online entertainment is deteriorating our relationships with surrounding fellow. Nowadays, many young and reclusive users prefer living in a virtual world on social sites than engaging in real-life relationships. They are more familiar to share their feelings and thoughts with virtual friends than family members or true friends. Even some people are so addicted to social networking sites that they constantly stare at their screens during dinners with their families without actually paying attention to the people around them. By doing so, they are alienating themselves from their family or social groups, losing the sense of community.
In conclusion, social media has detrimental impacts on people's health and their relationships. Therefore, we should limit our electronic device usage and spend more time with our surrounding people.
