The charts given show information about why the United States' residents travelled and what travel problems they experienced in the year 2009.

Looking at the illustration, it can be seen that the major reason for travel was to commute to and from work. Another key feature is that the primary concern of Americans, with regard to the trips they made, was the cost of travelling.

In 1990, 49% of the trips made by Americans were for the purpose of commuting. In contrast, only 6% of the US's people travelled to visit their friends or relatives. The figure for personal reasons was 19%, compared with 16% and 10% that for shopping and social/ creation purposes respectively.

In the same year, the price was the key consideration for 36% of American travellers. 19% of the total proportion was represented by safety concern issues. Additionally, The figure for the aggressive driving problem was 17%, which was 3% higher than that for highway congestion. The other two main issues combined constituted only a fraction of the total percentages in the US.
