Topic: In some countries, many more people are choosing to live alone nowadays than in the past. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Essay:
In modern life, more and more people, especially in developed countries, opt for moving out of their family homes and living independently. From my viewpoint, this trend has both advantages and negative effects on society and individuals as well.
On the one hand, living solo can be seen as positive from many perspectives. On the individual level, young adults who choose to live alone can have more opportunities to improve their independence and self-reliance than those living with their families. To upkeep their own houses, people will have to acquire valuable skills such as cooking, cleaning the house, managing the personal budget, and so on. These can definitely build up their personalities in a good way and therefore have a great impact on the development of the country in a broader sense. From the viewpoint of the whole economy, the rise in the number of one-person households will lead to greater demand for housing. This trend is likely to benefit the construction and real estate industry, thus contributing to the growth of the national economy.
On the other hand, living alone has detrimental effects as well. Firstly, those who live as single dwellers suffer from more stress because of financial and psychological problems. Being a singleton means they have to bear the responsibilities of finding their accommodation, paying the utility bills, buying daily commodities, and cannot receive much financial support from family. Hence, they have to work really hard to live up to their daily needs and tend to have a hectic and burdensome life. Moreover, the increase in the number of the one-person family will push up property prices and rents. Though this trend benefits some specific industries, it is likely to put more pressure on the general population. People nowadays are facing rising living costs and often find it hard to find a house at a reasonable price.
In conclusion, living solo has both beneficial and detrimental effects on individuals and the economy.
