Some people think that the best way to increase road safety is to increase the minimum legal age, for driving cars or riding motorbikes. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some people argue that traffic safety would be promoted best by increasing the minimum legal age of those who drive cars and ride motorbikes. From my perspective, I totally disagree with this opinion because the main cause of traffic accidents is not about the legal age but involved the lack of responsibilities of drivers and the poor condition of traffic infrastructures.

The main reason why I believe raising the driving age would not be a viable way to improve road safety is due to the fact that the majority of countries increased the minimum age at which people are allowed to drive to 18. Seemingly, at this age, people are fully physically and mentally developed. They are aware of potential hazards when driving. Therefore, it seems that prohibiting those people from driving is preposterous. In reality, the irresponsibilities of drivers are the leading cause of traffic accidents. It is reported that there are approximately 3500 Vietnamese people perishing each year because of drunk drivers. Thus, instead of raising the driving age, people should focus on educating drivers to be more responsible.

Another reason why I support the notion that increasing the minimum legal age is too narrow an approach and would not have the desired result is that no matter how old drivers are, they would possibly jeopardize their life if they travel on poor-conditioned roads. According to a recent study, poor traffic infrastructure is the factor that accounts for 32 per cent of traffic injuries in Vietnam. In fact, the victim of these accidents include people of all ages, meaning that the people’s ages make no difference in alleviating traffic accidents. Therefore, it is better to improve the roads' qualities than to change the minimum legal age.

In conclusion, I completely disagree that raising the driving age is the most effective way to improve traffic safety. This is because the factors that lead to traffic accidents is not about people’s ages but correlated with drivers’ irresponsibilities and poor-conditioned infrastructures.
