Question:
The chart below gives information about how families in one country spent their weekly income in 1968 and in 2018. Summaries the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.
My answer:
The chart describes about the eight categories of weekly expenses by households in a certain country in 1968 and 50 years later. Overall, food used to be the main element of their expenditure in the past, whereas modern families spend their money on other activities over food.
In 1968, food expense was by far the major category and 35 percent of their income was spent on it, which was triple the following sectors (10 percent each for housing and clothing and footwear). The remaining sectors accounted for approximately six to nine percent each.
The figure for 2018 showed a significant difference in how families used their money. Firstly, the ratio for food was halved marking about 17 percent. Then, the increase was observed in the housing and leisure sectors, both of these ratios were doubled roughly compared with that of 1968 (about 19 percent and 22 percent respectively). The transportation cost also increased from eight percent to 14 percent over the period of time. Other factors occupied smaller amount of total expense despite household goods revealing the same figure in both 1968 and 2018.
