It is commonly argued by some that the increasing flexibility of the working environment nowadays, such as working from home, does good for employees’ lives. Nevertheless, others contend that this changeover is a way for private companies to take advantage of workers. This essay will elaborate on both sides of the debate before explaining why I am in favor of the former view.
Admittedly, working at home brings a wide range of benefits for employees to some extent. First, not only can workers actively choose their working time and working environment that are most suitable for them to feel at ease and comfortable at work, but they also can avoid many of the detrimental impacts of working at the office on them, such as pressure from colleagues and the boss, or noises from printers, coffee makers, etc. This advantage facilitates staff to improve their productivity at work, resulting in workers’ satisfaction and improved quality services for companies. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic period, many dealerships could not operate because of the state’s social distancing policy, so working from home was the best choice for providers to continue working and prevent companies from going bankrupt. Second, another value of working at home is that workers can accumulate an abundance of money because they do not have to travel to work, and this budget can be spent on their hobbies and amusement activities.
However, flexibility of the working environment is an opportunity for many companies to make use of their staffs, since companies do not have to spend exorbitantly on renting offices, expensive equipment such as computers, air conditioners, printers, and electricity bills. This amount of money is invested in many projects that may bring plenty of profits for companies. Moreover, employee pay is not commensurate with their exertion and skills. Since many companies do not need their employees to be physically present at the office, the authorities are taking advantage of this facility and creating negative impacts on the employee’s future career.
In conclusion, although each perspective has its own merits, I am of the opinion that an increasingly flexible working environment such as working at home can do good for employees as well as employers due to their increased productivity at work. Therefore, it is highly recommended that workers correctly choose the most appropriate working environment to achieve high work efficiency.
