Score is important in education. Agree/Disagree?
Education, which has been existing for thousands of years, attaches to scores that are considered as a target or sometimes a measure of learning process. It makes sense when engaging in lifelong learning, everybody is at least once in their lives obsessed with their grades at school. From my perspective, scores actually play an important role in the foundation of education, specifically in becoming accustomed to finding out knowledge at school; however, after a certain time, scores will no longer be satisfactory enough to measure their own awareness.
Apparently, scores in exams provide students with short-term targets and future learning orientation. Students, by considering their scores, can know their limitations and mistakes and endeavor their best to conquer and achieve a flying color in the next tests. Strikingly, scores create a competitive environment among students and boost their sense of conquest, the amount of dopamine in their brains and their interest in discovering knowledge. Scientific research on the positive sides of the domino effect epitomizes this point. When living in an environment where there are many talented, laborious and studious people, children have more opportunities to nurture their patience, curiosity and have encouragement to learn more and more. Last but not least, grades in tests partly reflect the students’ awareness and memorization ability. Maybe, besides using grades, there are no other effective methods that can inspect the knowledge of students faster and more correctly.
When it comes to long-term education, when people enter the workforce/ have a desired job, they no longer have to do the tests and exams about the previous lectures. In other words, studying is no longer done to obtain high scores like in the past, but rather to have life experience, better living standards, a healthy lifestyle and the like to survive in a hustle and bustle world/ fast-paced world. These achievements, undoubtedly, can not be measured by grades. Furthermore, our lives are changing day in and day out, leading to the existence of multitudes of breakthroughs and innovations. The knowledge, therefore, is up-to-date and no standard units can quantify this huge knowledge. As a case in point, Issac Newton once said: “What we know is a drop, what we don’t know is an ocean”.
It is readily apparent to me that grades have both benefits and drawbacks. To make use of these aforementioned benefits, teachers should maximize using grades in teaching students' favorite subjects and raise students' awareness of the importance of long-term learning in lieu of only paying attention to grades.
