Topic:
The number of people working from home has grown in some countries. What advantages and disadvantages can come of this trend?
My essay:
Although the advent of the internet has long enabled people to work from home, the stay-at-home restrictions to curb COVID-19 for years in most parts of the world have incentivized and made working from home a new normal for many people. In my opinion, this trend could have positive and negative consequences in equal measure.
On the one hand, the rise in remote work can offer several benefits. First, workers may save on expenses by working from home. In particular, gas, car maintenance, transportation, parking fees, professional wardrobe and many other spendings can be reduced or eliminated. Second, working from home often results in greater productivity. This is because it usually allows people to take breaks whenever they feel burnout and set a work schedule at the time that they are most productive without office distractions. Finally, workers in their own abode can have a better work-life balance as they gain more time from removing the daily commute to the office and can arrange their own hours to accommodate essential tasks such as dropping kids off at school or having a health checkup which all may not be possible with a conventional job.
On the other hand, the arguments given above can be considered from the opposite angle. Rather than lowering costs, workers may face additional expenses such as purchasing furniture for home office space and specific equipment for telecommuting (e.g computers, headsets and webcams). Similarly, the freedom to take a break and look at phones or televisions without supervision can make it difficult for workers to focus on job tasks, resulting in poor performance. Furthermore, they can have trouble detaching themselves from their professional commitments as their colleagues might contact them for work-related problems at any time of the day, or can even overwork due to the potential lack of a fixed off-work time.
In conclusion, the increase in work-at-home occupations has both beneficial and detrimental effects on expenditure, productivity and work-life synergy.
