Topic:

Some people think that parents should teach children how to be good members of society. Others, however, believe the school is the place to learn this.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

My essay:

Children are undeniably society's invaluable assets, therefore, their education and development are always the primary public interest. However, opinions are divided as to whether parents or schools are responsible for teaching young people to become good members of the community. In my opinion, it is a collective responsibility.

On the one hand, parents have a profound influence on their offspring. Prior to preschool, children are under the sole custody of their parents, and even during times when they spend a large proportion of a day in school, the parents are still the ones who spend more time with them than the teachers, who have to take care of around 30 kids at a time, or the friends. This provides a great opportunity for parents to guide their child to learn the concept of good and bad and to behave accordingly, as well as becoming the child’s good role model since children by nature mimic the behaviours of people around them. In addition, family bonds are far stronger and more important than any other relationship, thus, children are more likely to listen to their parents compared to others.

On the other hand, schools also play a key role in youth development. To have a conducive teaching and learning environment, students have to follow certain school rules, and teachers need to punish the pupils with disruptive behaviours as well as praise those that are well-mannered. This cultivates and nurtures basic necessary qualities such as obedience, respect and discipline. Furthermore, without the presence of their parents, children can learn to be independent, and through interacting with their peers and completing homework, they can develop social and problem-solving skills, which are essential for their future career prospects and generally in life. Finally, besides acquiring academic knowledge, students also learn about moral values and social issues in many subjects, including sociology and speech and debate.

In conclusion, both parents and schools have the ability and the duty to cultivate children into civilized and educated individuals.
