Topic:

Some people think that environmental problems should be solved on a global scale while others believe it is better to deal with them nationally. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

My essay:

Environmental degradation is taking place at an alarming rate all over the world. While some urge a global intervention, others are of the belief that it can be effectively dealt with on a national scale. In my own perspective, different problems associated with the environment require different approaches.

There are many reasons why ecological issues should be addressed at a national level. The nature and causes of environmental problems greatly vary from country to country. For instance, agriculture-based countries such as China, Brazil and Argentina mostly suffer from soil degradation and water shortage, whereas high fish dependent countries, e.g Philippines and Indonesia, face the growing loss of marine biodiversity. As a result, each nation has to identify its own pressing concerns and the contributing factors to find an applicably specified solution. Second, environmental issues virtually necessitate an immidiate action. However, global submits usually take years for the participants to reach a joint agreement, so it is clearly more advantageous that each nation quickly decides the solution and takes steps to mitigate the problems.

On the other hand, environmental issues cannot be comprehensively solved with an effort of a sole country. Many of such issues, including global warming, water pollution and loss of biodiversity, manifest as transboundary, which means that they spill over national borders through means of rivers, seas, air and precipitation. Many coastal countries, for example, have been experiencing extreme weather disasters and increasing loss of land for agricultural use and animal habitat by the increased sea levels; the main culprit is the burning of fossil fuels from industrialised countries, over which the suffering countries have little to no control. Moreover, several developing countries are displacing their environment-destruct factors to poorer countries through manufacturing outsourcing and shipping waste overseas. Since these developing countries typically do not have sufficient finance, competent government and adequate industrial waste management to combat those contamination elements, international agreement and global funding to regulate and contain these actions are necessary.

In conclusion, although environmental challenges necessitate nationally distinct and instant action to be successfully addressed, they are also characterized as global, thus, demanding a worldwide collective effort.
