In some countries around the world, the workplace has no walls or barriers between each desk. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

It has been observed that workspaces without walls or barriers are being more and more popular in some places over the world. Although there are some disadvantages of open plans offices can be recognized, I believe that there are far more advantages.

The biggest downside of working in an open-office environment is the distraction. Working together in open working spaces means that people might be easier to distract by a lot of conversations occurring around them. It can come from a colleague asking questions, another one talking on the phone, or even chatting in the corner. Employees have to find more innovative ways to drown out co-workers and stay focused. In addition, an open-floor layout also cost the employees privacy. They might be observed by their manager all the time and don’t have any private places for calls or messages. As a result, workers feel anxious about always being watched and productivity will be slowed down.

Despite the aforementioned negatives, there are plenty of positive things that open offices can bring up. Firstly, it will be better communication within the team, which often leads to greater teamwork. No more barriers and walls build the phenomenon called ‘culture collision’, which is a chance to generate creativity, and support between employees and even create a sense of community. Secondly, open-plan offices are more flexible and customizable than cubicle-laden spaces. Businesses don't have to commit to a single layout. Besides, they not only can fit more employees into an open working space but can also rearrange easily as the team grows without any additional budget to rent more spaces. Hence, open-plan layouts might be the best choice for small businesses.

In conclusion, although there are some drawbacks that the employees would be faced, open workspaces have clearly benefits such as boosting the effectiveness of teamwork, creating flexibility and customize than private spaces, especially for small businesses.
