Topic:

Many people choose to travel abroad to learn a foreign language instead of studying in their hometown. Do the advantages of learning a new language in this way outweigh the disadvantages?

My essay

The globalization of markets has made knowing a foreign language a huge advantage for people seeking a job. This makes learning a new language more popular than ever before, and some prefer to do this by traveling abroad rather than staying in their hometown. In my opinion, the harmful impact arising from this approach outweighs its positive effects.

On the one hand, learning a foreign language in the country where it is spoken poses many benefits. The learners are inevitably surrounded by the language they are trying to learn, either in the streets through advertising and fascia boards, and traffic signs, or in their own homes, TV, newspapers and even product packaging. Also, they are forced to actively use the language since they have to interact with the locals when ordering food at a restaurant, shopping and asking for directions. All these factors are conducive to mastering the desired language. Living in an unfamiliar environment also helps people to develop social and problem-solving skills, which are essential for career development and life.

On the other hand, language learners who choose to travel abroad face both financial and mental problems. Indeed, the languages that most people want to learn are from developed countries, and the cost of living there is rather expensive, especially if the learners are from a developing country. As a result, they are likely to experience financial strain, one of the greatest causes of stress. More importantly, as it is not easy to make new friends without efficient communication, and have face-to-face conversations with family and friends, living abroad often causes people to feel lonely and isolated, which can even lead to depression. This mental health issue is counterproductive to the original aim of acquiring the language.

In conclusion, traveling abroad not only shorten language learning progress but also build crucial life skills. However, these possible benefits are far less significant compared to the potential dangers, which are making people struggle financially and mentally.
