Please review my essay

Some people believe that people today have no interest in maintaining the traditional culture of their country or region. Others believe that it is still important to people that we preserve a traditional way of life.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

My essay:

Every community has some shared experiences or activities that are passed from generation and generation, creating a variety of unique traditions and customs. Unfortunately, many of them are gradually disappearing or have even already perished, which raises questions about our current maintenance of these traditions. According to many, this process is not seen as a matter of concern by people nowadays, whereas others see it as indispensable. In my opinion, we have to nurture good traditions and customs.

On the one hand, it is argued that individuals currently pay no interest in maintaining their own traditional culture. First, some local customs are outdated and not favoured by the current generation. For example, folk music in some countries is no longer mainstream, which means not many still enjoy it, and few artists learn how to perform it. Furthermore, some traditions are even morally unacceptable when considered modern standards. In fact, in some rural areas of Viet Nam, the practice of child marriage and bride kidnapping, in which a man abducts the woman he wishes to marry, still continues today even though they are deemed illegal by the law. Second, people become less and less attracted to traditional culture as they are more interested in cultures from foreign countries, especially from Western. For example, Halloween is originally a Western festival, but it is quickly spread to other parts of the world and even become an annual event in some countries.

On the other hand, some people argue that the protection of the traditional way of life is crucial. They believe customs and practices demonstrate the community’s history. When people participate in such activities, they can appreciate the past, which brings a sense of unity and security. For example, every house in my country, Vietnam, has a small altar, in which people place offerings of food and picture of their ancestors. They regularly pray in front of it to show worship towards the dead, and this rite connects us with the past generation, forming a feeling of belonging. Traditions also provide the uniqueness of each culture, which incentivizes foreign tourists to visit the country as they want to experience a different lifestyle.

In conclusion, the favoritism in foreign cultures, as well as the old-fashioned and immoral character of some customs, drive people to be indifferent towards conserving their traditional culture. However, these cultures also display the community’s identity and cultural diversity, which makes it vital to preserve them.
