Some people think that the best way to solve global environmental problems is to increase the cost of fuel. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Because vehicles’ exhaustion is identified to be one of the culprits behind various environmental problems nowadays, some people believe that the optimal method to protect the environment is to hobble the use of vehicles by raising the cost of fuel. I completely disagree with this assertion.

On the one hand, only increasing the cost of fuel is an unfeasible method to protect the environment effectively, as vehicles’ emissions are merely one of the numerous factors that lead to today's environmental issues. In reality, apart from vehicles’ exhaustion, human practices such as littering, logging, and discharging untreated effluents into rivers are also major contributors to environmental problems. Therefore, solely raising the cost of fuel hardly makes any measurable difference. Furthermore, the method also produces counter-effects, as it entails various economic costs. To be more specific, the costs for foods, goods, and transportation would soar significantly, if the cost of fuel is raised, which potentially leads to inflation.

On the other hand, there are practical ways to tackle environmental issues. The first one is for governments to encourage their citizens to switch to electric vehicles. By implementing this, the amount of exhaustion emitted from gasoline cars and motorcycles would be reduced immensely, which helps mitigate air pollution. Additionally, governments should also impose stringent punishments for individuals and companies having environmentally irresponsible practices. This will act as a deterrent to potential environmental perpetrators, thereby possibly ceasing various activities harmful to the environment.

In conclusion, I strongly disagree with the idea that increasing the cost of fuel is the most ideal way to combat environmental issues. This is because I believe this method not only can solve a little part of the problem but also cripple the economy. Moreover, the problem can be solved better by encouraging the use of battery-powered vehicles and severely punishing any persons or companies that do environmentally damaging activities.
