This is an essay that is written under time pressure, and I post it immediately after the time’s off.

Some students prefer to take a gap year between high school and university, to work or to travel. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages.

Traditionally, students will enroll in colleges after they graduate from high school. But on these days, having a year-long break seems a preferable choice for many students. In my opinion, although taking a gap year may have some backfire, the benefits it brings could be very good for those who choose this.

Deferring university enrollment can have some disadvantages. Gap-year takers may find it hard to achieve good grades in University because their knowledge when studying in high school may be forgotten when taking a year off. As a result of this, they will fall behind their peers in academic performance. Pressure from peers will make those students losing their confidence and interest in studying.

On the other hand, despite the disadvantages above, taking a gap year before enrolling in University may bring many benefits. Firstly, those students who decide to take a year-long break will have time to find their passion and hobbies. Many young people spend all their time getting high grades in high school so that they don’t have time to figure out which job they want to do. In a year off, they will have time to travel and work to identify a suitable career path or a person they want to be in the future. For instance, Huyen Chip, whose story inspires many young people, decided to take a gap year to travel worldwide to find out the meaning of her life. And when Huyen knows her passion for Artificial Intelligence, she applied to Stanford University and was awarded a full-ride scholarship. Secondly, delaying tertiary education for one year will help the students enrich life experiences and hone practical skills. Taking a part-time job or volunteering in a charitable organization in their neighborhood will help those students develop social skills such as communicating and cooperation and helping their community. Last but not least, a gap year is a time for people to relax after a long time studying, to spend time with friends and family and enjoy their life without any pressure on scores and exams. This will make them feel better when enrolling in University the following year.

In conclusion, the benefit of taking a gap year brings for students outweighs any disadvantages it may have.
