Some people think that young people should follow social traditions. Others think that they should be free to have their own way of living and behaving.
Presumably, social traditions are what mold and set a standard for a person’s thinking and behaviors. Some people think that the young should appreciate and adhere to these values, whereas others say that young people should have the right to live as they wish. I agree with the former but have some reservations.
On the one hand, social traditions were established based on cultural practice. Therefore, by following those, the young can preserve their cultural identity. As an example, incense offering is an indispensable feature in Vietnamese ceremonies as it is a vehicle for the Vietnamese to express appreciation and commemorate their forebears. So if the young were to stop practicing this custom, then they would demean the importance of those rituals, thereby leading to a degradation of their culture. However, there are some traditions that need to be eliminated. For example, arranged and early marriage should be abolished since it violates people’s freedom. This means although it is important for the young to stick to social traditions, they should also consider avoiding those which are outdated and absurd.
On the other hand, some people feel that the young should be allowed to live freely. The reason for this belief might be that they may be seriously under the influence of celebrities. It seems that famous people are always trying to stand out from others; their behaviors might be outrageous and bizarre in order to get the attention of the public. Because of this, some people might be hypnotized to think that it is best to show off a person’s individuality rather than contain it to align with social norms and traditions. My view is that this way of thinking is seriously wrong since celebrities sometimes do this to create dramas and attract attention from the press. And their behaviors can sometimes exert negative impacts on society.
In conclusion, I believe that it is necessary for the young to follow some social traditions because there are those which are considered unsuitable for modern life.
