In some countries, senior employees are allowed to decide when to retire. Although this can bring certain benefits, I still believe the downsides of it are much significant.
Seemingly, one of the merits of allowing senior workers to freely prolong their working life is that it helps companies avoid wasting time recruiting and training new staff. Seemingly, old people are too used to their jobs and they are rather not enthusiastic about changes. Therefore, they are not likely to change jobs. The young, on the contrary, would switch to new jobs, if they see better compensation and promotion opportunities in other companies. And this may result in the lack of experienced workers in many of today's companies. Thus, by keeping these old employees, companies do not need to constantly employ and train new ones.
However, allowing the old to work longer might bring various disadvantages. First, companies are likely to lose their efficiency. One primary reason is that old people’s physical and mental health deteriorate over time, meaning their productivity will decrease accordingly. In fact, with a majority of employees is old, companies would have to allocate much of their financial budget to employee benefits, especially to medical insurance and pensions. Furthermore, young people are more updated with new knowledge and skills, so they can bring more benefits to the company than the old. To illustrate this, there are more and more technologies that aid people’s work. And since the young are more familiar with those technologies, they can apply them to their work, which helps substantially increase their productivity.
