Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

While some people consider the extinction of specific species, both flora and fauna is the major environmental concern today, others think there are more environmental problems that are of greater importance. I agree with the latter because I think that pollution and climate change impact more directly on humankind rather than the loss of some species.

One of the reasons why some argue that the loss of particular species, both plants and animals, is the primary environmental issue is that flora and fauna in their ecosystems are interdependent. This means the disappearance of cornerstone species will inevitably trigger the extinction of the others. Consequently, this will pose a threat of food chain disruption in which some living species lose their source of food, and this includes humankind.

However, there are people who think that other issues such as pollution and climate change are more important. There are two possible explanations for this belief. First, nowadays pollution has had a catastrophic impact on people’s lives. To be more specific, polluted living conditions caused by irresponsible environmental practices have made many people suffer from various diseases such as certain cancer and fever. Second, Climate change is also to blame for various human tragedy. It results in extreme weather events that can destroy and decimate human lives. As an example, recently, wildfires in Australia have made thousands of people perished and lost their homes.

In conclusion, whilst some people argue that the loss of particular species of both flora and fauna is the most worrying environmental problem, others believe other environmental issues such as pollution and climate change deserve more attention. I agree with the latter because these problems inflict more severe and direct damages on people’s lives. And I believe the loss of species can be mitigated through breeding and other methods.
