Adolescents’ Rebelliousness towards Parents
As children enter adolescence, their relationship with their parents takes a new turn. From a quiet, obedient child, the adolescent becomes their critic. Some rebel if parents force their decisions on them. They pose stiff resistance when parents coerce them to do things which themselves do not practice. When parents advise them to refrain from doing things which did not entail harm or disapproval during their childhood, adolescents see it as inconsistency.
Adolescents want their parents to give them complete freedom in their decisions. While some parents give them this freedom, some believe that they are not mature enough to make decisions independently. Parents think they should guide their children in what course they should pursue, what career they should choose, and what kind of person they should select as their life partner. So, when they insist them to consider their advice, they feel frustrated and become rebellious. Sometimes, this takes them into depression or suffer other psychological problems.
Adolescents become highly critical when parents change their viewpoint. For instance, when parents ask them to stop being friends with certain persons if they have fallen into bad company or have cultivated bad habits, the adolescents see it as an inconsistency. Another example is that parents encourage their children wearing almost all kinds of outfits in their childhood, but they do not approve of certain kinds in adolescence as they are not appropriate to their age. While some adolescents understand their parents in this, some naively criticise them for the inconsistency.
Adolescents object when parents ask them to practice things which they do not. For example, some parents ask their children to cultivate the habit of reading saying it is highly rewarding. Children expect them to have cultivated the habit when they attach so much importance to it. However, for the parents, they want their children to make use of the resources and opportunities that they were not provided with when they were young. But, the adolescents who resist complying with their parents, do not understand this.
In conclusion, children’s rebellious behaviour towards their parents strains their relationship. In some cases, it leads to children getting into depression and parents suffering from serious psychological problems. Parents should consider the physical and mental development that their children undergo as they enter adolescence. This will enable them to think of appropriate measures to solve the misunderstandings between them.
