Cheating in Examination

Examinations are deemed to be very important in schools and universities, for they determine a student’s promotion to the next higher class. So, cheating in examinations is viewed seriously. Those caught cheating are punished with rustication ranging from six months to even five years. Despite this, students continue to cheat in examinations. Research proves that students do that due to various reasons.

First, students cheat in examination to avoid being reprimanded by parents. Most parents consider good grades are indicators of intelligence. In his study, Educator Dr. Robert Wallace concluded “parental pressure to get good grades is the major reason students cheat”. Studies prove that parents’ high expectation is to such a level that it gives children performance anxiety. While high-achieving students are able to meet their parents’ expectations or at least achieve a reasonable mark, the average and below average performers copy to secure good grades.

Another reason is that teachers tell students good grades will enable them to get admission in premier institutions. This puts the low-achieving students under severe pressure. Lecturer in School Education and author of Doing School, Denise Clark Pope says “Students feel the most important thing they do is get the grade by hook or crook”. In some schools, students are permitted to continue to study a subject not based on their interest but the grades they have secured in that subject. This forces the below-average performers to use shortcuts to boost their grades.

Finally, cheating in examination is also due to peer pressure. Research conducted in many parts of the world conclude that students think unless they get good grades they will be mocked at by their high–achieving peers. Studies prove that adolescents are very much influenced by the peers and apparently they identify with those peers who have similar interests. If peers in the peer group decide to use stealthy ways to increase their grades, they do think of doing the same thing

In conclusion, it is important to note that while cheating in examinations can never be tolerated, parents and educational institutions should study the causes and take suitable measures.
