Government investment in the arts, such as music and theatre, is a waste of money. Governments must invest this money in public services instead. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

Many people feel that the state budget must be allocated on public services rather than on the arts, such as music and theatre as they believe the authorities would waste money when investing in them. From my perspective, I somewhat agree with this statement because if public services are not provided with enough funds, many societal problems would arise; however, spending money on the arts is justified as they play a vital role in upholding national culture.

To start with, investing more money in public services such as schools and hospitals offers social and economic benefits. For example, if the government allocates more money on education, more people would be educated and this means a larger skilful and productive workforce would be created in the future. As a result, individuals would contribute more to their country, hence, improving the standard of living and boosting the economy of a country. Similarly, public health might improve substantially if the medication sectors receive more funds.

In other words, numerous societal problems would arise, if public sectors lack funds. To be more precise, the rate of illiterate and ill people might rise. This could be the precursor of the problems of increasing crime rate other social issues. For example, in some regions in India, public services are seriously lack of funds. Indeed, in these regions, the crime rate is always at an alarming rate.

However, it does seem unreasonable to say that investing money in the arts is a waste of money. One such possibility is that the arts such as music and movies arguably engender the nation’s culture. For instance, the custom of ancestor worship is an integral part of Vietnamese culture and this usually be seen on Vietnamese movies as this the way to remind future generations to respect their ancestors. Therefore, I believe that investing money on the arts can help to preserve national culture.

In conclusion, I somewhat agree that the state budget should be spent on public services. This is because it has beneficial impacts on the economy and society. Nonetheless, I admit that the arts should also be given certain attention from the authorities as they help to conserve national culture. Given this situation, it seems that the government should place a higher value on the importance of public services than the arts.
