International travel is becoming cheaper than before, so more and more countries open their doors to tourists. Do the advantages of increased tourism outweigh the disadvantages?
The cost of global travelling is lesser compared to the past, thus, tourists nowadays are unable to travel to more countries than before. From my perspective, the merits that increased tourism offers are more significant than its drawbacks.
To start with, the principal disadvantage of increased tourism is that the larger numbers of visitors can result in environmental harm. Admittedly, not all travellers are environmentally conscious, some of them even believe that it is not their responsibility to keep the places they visit clean. For example, every year Chinese tourists litter tons of disposal waste in the streets and other public places in Vietnam. As well as this, with an increase in the numbers of foreign tourists, the demand for vehicles is rising exponentially. This can lead to the problem of traffic congestion and in many cities.
However, there are considerable merits that tourism can offers. First, tourism spending can create jobs for the local populace. Visitors spend their money directly on local services and products. As a result, in order to meet tourists’ demands, local tourism-related businesses would expand their chain of services, providing numbers of jobs and generating income for local residents. It is estimated that foreign visitors to Da Nang generate 2 billion dollars in income and 3521 jobs in 2018 and this account for 4 per cent in the region’s income and 3 per cent of the region’s jobs. Furthermore, tourists can help to preserve local cultural heritage. Since the places’ cultures are the main attraction that incentivize travellers to visit them. Therefore, increased tourism would encourage local people to uphold their cultural practices.
In conclusion, although the downside of the increased tourism is it results in environmental degradation, I argue that its benefits offset its drawbacks as it creates jobs for local people and helps to protect local cultural identity.
