Animal Testing
Animal testing refers to scientific experiments during which live animals are subjected to procedures that can cause them pain, suffering, distress or permanent harm. While animal testing has been happening in different parts of the world, animal rights organisations and animal rights activists have been protesting against it because it is primarily a cruel act. They are of the view that animal testing is ineffective as animals do not get major types of heart diseases, main types of cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia. Another important reason the animal rights activists are against animal testing is the act belittles the complexities of human conditions that are affected by genetics, socio-economic factors, deeply rooted psychological issues and different personal experiences. In my opinion, I strongly agree with the view that animal testing is not justified because poor animals are made to undergo profoundly painful and distressing procedures.
During animal testing, animals are injected or force fed potentially harmful substances. They are exposed to high levels of radiation. Some procedures are so distressing that certain organs or tissues are removed to cause pain deliberately. In some animal testing procedures, animals are subjected to frightening situations or forced to inhale toxic gases to create anxiety and depression. Animals that are to be used for testing are confined to cages in laboratories which are sterile indoor environments where they have no freedom of movement, let alone they have control over the lives. Further, it is pertinent to note that animal testing is not as effective as it is portrayed to be.
Research shows that nearly ninety percent of the drugs have failed in human trials notwithstanding the promising results in animals tests. Using rats, bats, rabbits to test the efficacy of drugs for humans do not provide statistically significant insights. Studies have found that tests on monkeys give results which are as poor as those that obtained using any other species. In a recent study it was found out of ninety three dangerous side effects only nineteen were predicted through animal testing.
In conclusion, animal testing is definitely not an effective method to test drugs for humans. The findings of the research undertaken in various parts of the world substantiate this. It is high time scientists who use animals for drugs for humans thought of an alternative method as it will save the lives of innocent animals.
