Some people think that adolescents should involve in employment while they are still in high school. Others claim the opposite. Although getting a job has both benefits and drawbacks to teenagers, I personally believe that the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages.
To start with, there are many benefits to adolescents obtaining employment. Having a job is a golden opportunity for teenagers better develop into mature, productive and responsible members of the community. Specifically, teenagers learn how to manage finances effectively. Even if they spend money on cruel expenses, they will learn to budget between recreational expenses, clothes or educational expenses. Moreover, they gain many soft skills and practical knowledge, which are helpful for them in their future career, such as improving their communication, learning how to handle with people, interview skills, multi-tasking skills.
However, there are certain disadvantages to teenagers having jobs while they are still in high school. Having jobs may take a heavy toll on students' physical and mental health. Specifically, school-aged youths don’t have enough time to participate in sports and leisure activities which play cruel roles in helping students to stay healthy and giving them a sense of happiness. Moreover, working as part-timers can cause students insomnia and irritability, which lower their concentration at school. Also, adolescents will feel stress if there are work-school imbalance.
Finally, employments take up the time spent on doing homework and joining extracurricular activities. Working may lead them to lack of preparation of academic activities, which may discourage working teen from going to school and lower grades in school. A job may take the place of extracurricular activities, which bring a lot of benefits to participants instead of working, such as practical experience and building up relationships. Gaining knowledge and enrich their skills are the most important purposes for students rather than working as a lifeguarding in a pool or babysitting.
Although there are many benefits of working when being in high school, I think that there are drawbacks outweigh the advantages. Students should spend time studying and joining extracurricular activities instead of working.
