Some employers want to be able to contact their staff at all times, even on holidays. Does this development have more advantages than disadvantages?
Working nowadays has become more challenging than ever. Some companies demand that their employees could be called upon anytime including weekends and holidays. Although such a demand would probably benefit the company, I feel it is a burden to the workers and detrimental to their overall well-being.
Those employers who believe that their subordinates should answer their queries even during off-hours argue that doing so will result in the betterment of the company. The reason behind this that certain issues can be addressed immediately without having to wait for the employees to attend work. For example, in accounting firms, if there are some doubtful data which are needed to be verified but the accountant-in-charge is on a holiday, this can be tackled quickly by calling the accountant to verify the reliability of the figures. It is obviously unfavourable for the firm to wait for him to finish his vacation before addressing the issue. In this regard, calling the staff is clearly beneficial to the company.
However, regardless of how favourable such a development is for the company, this should not result in people being contacted by their employers at all times even during vacations. It is essential that people spend time outside their work to rejuvenate themselves. This is proven by many scientific studies. In fact, the American College of Preventive Medicine recommends that people should have at least 48 hours away from work every week to spend on their family or do other lesuirely activities in order to avoid burn-outs. This will keep them motivated and achieve better results in their fields of work. Furthermore, doctors claim that people who are preoccupied of their jobs even during the weekends or holidays are less productive than those who are not. Thus, it is clear that such demands by the company will bring more harm than good on its workers.
In conclusion, while it is advantageous to companies if they can contact their employees at all times, I believe that the drawbacks are significant. Personally, I would not want my boss bothering me in the middle of the night or even during vacation.
