Modernism in Education

The term Education according to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary is the process of training by formal instruction and supervised practice especially in a skill, trade or profession. Modernism is the practice, usage or expression peculiar to modern times. Though education has been undergoing changes continuously, radical changes have taken place in the past two decades.

Firstly, modern education focuses more on interdisciplinary approach. This approach is based on the premise that real life situations encompass knowledge of more than one discipline. For example, for estimating the birth rate of a place, the person needs to have at least fundamental knowledge of demography and math. Similarly while planning an expedition, the person needs to draw on the knowledge he or she acquired in geography, science, and math among others.

The second major change one can observe in modern education is pupils play a significant role in teaching; the role of a teacher is more of a facilitator in the transfer of knowledge than the only person meant for transfer of knowledge. Modern education desires to leverage the inherent creative and thinking abilities of the young minds for knowledge dissemination. In today’s classrooms pupils discuss the new lessons with their classmates. The teacher intervenes only when he or she feels it is necessary. This practice seems to interest the pupils more than the one where the teacher played lead role. It also gives young people opportunities to develop leadership, communication and sense of responsibility.

The third major change that is seen in today’s education is adaptive learning. This approach considers the fact that no two children learn at the same pace. Thus, the approach gives the required support to pupils at different levels of learning to understand the concepts and move on to the next level. While the slow learners are given more time to learn the concepts, the high achievers are given assignments that challenge their intellectual and creative faculties.

In conclusion, the modern practices in the field of education which have been explained above aim to make education meaningful and enjoyable for the pupil.
