Please review my cover letter

Please review my cover letter, and give your opinon and feedback if applicable. There seems to be a weird tense shift in the first paragraph. Any thing is appreicated.

Dear Selection Committee:

Please consider me as a candidate for a Rangel Undergraduate Internship Scholarship. I am currently a freshman computer science major, with a GPA of 3.68.

I am applying to this scholarship because I believe in improving community, in particular the education service. This perhaps is a cultural belief, but it continues to develop when I started a robotics team in Francis Lewis High School in 2008. This establishment engages the students there involve in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines beyond course works. They build a robot that completes the objectives, and they compete against other teams. I discover my interest in engineering there. I also have become increasingly aware of the challenges our education is facing today, which I have discussed them in two of my academic papers in FIQWS 206 at City College.

Other qualifications are my experiences in club services and knowledge in computer science. I am now the elected webmaster of the Associated Computing Machinery Chapter (ACM) at City College. I am also engage in writing a proposal to City College on behalf of a new initiative called, Open STEM. This initiative will allow undergraduate students to teach K-12 students in the city through an annual STEM exhibition, and series of seminars, and workshops.

As a candidate of this scholarship, I am applying a summer internship position in New York City Department of Education. This will give me a direct involvement in public education sector. As an elected official in college, and a founder of a new initiative in high school, I have demonstrated my potential for leadership. I am thirst for giving in to my community.
